This stunning photograph shows a dark cloud in deep space where new stars are forming alongside a cluster of brilliant stars that have already emerged.
The cloud, known as Lupus 3, lies about 600 light years from Earth in the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion).
The picture, recently taken from a telescope at the European Southern Observatory in Chile, is regarded as the best image ever taken of Lupus 3.
The observatory has released two images, the second a close-up (below) and a video which reveal both the Lupus 3 space cloud and a dazzling bright star cluster beside it.
